Biography

Dane was born in Louisiana, as the oldest of five children on January 4th, 1975 at 10:30am – on the kitchen table. This may account for his natural genius in the kitchen and love of cooking.

At two years old, he moved his family to rural New York State, where he assumed he would be able to keep an eye on his parents. This was Dane’s first lesson in the unpredictable nature of people. He soon realized that even with close supervision, adults can get into a lot of trouble (best not to get him started on this topic, trust me!).

At age twelve Dane left Waldorf school to attend events at the Findhorn Community in Scotland. During his stay he learned that decision-making and group-organization through the process of “attunement” works extremely well, that there are funny, thought provoking channeled entities out there, and that a three bedroom house was not big enough for him and the other six members of his family to peacefully co-exist in.

After a brief return to Waldorf school in Vancouver Canada, Dane left formal education for good at age fourteen, to create a self-designed home- schooling program (see "ideas that change the world" in the "written art section of this site for more about the school). The curriculum was a response to a carefully chosen question: “What skills, if learned, would allow me to create and co-create the most personal and global well-being over the next 100 years?" Dane discarded much of his former high-school focuses and added several of his own, including "integrated imagining" and sustainable gardening, which became his business when he left home at seventeen.

At age nineteen Dane moved to Whidbey Island, WA, and continued to invent his landscape company around the question: “What would I want to receive as a customer if I knew everything I know now as a landscaper?” This question prompted him to learn about site development, land-clearing for new construction and how to integrate gardens with the construction process. He refined this service by designing and building two homes of his own and landscaping them both. He continues to run this company full time until the present date, with a current niche in the creation of custom crystal art and sacred spaces.

When he was twenty seven, Dane moved to Marin, CA, to begin his first romantic relationship in earnest, which brought two years of growth and success before it ended. Taking advantage of the rich social scene in the San Francisco Bay area, Dane turned his considerable imagination towards the potential for human relationships, developing communication tools, hosting groups, and attending numerous workshops by the Human Awareness Institute. These in turn led to discovering his unusual sensitivities to his environment socially and emotionally.

At heart, Dane is an artist – an inventor of new structures to fulfill practical and esoteric functions of all kinds. He loves slowing everything down so it can be seen in depth and understood – and in so doing seeing all the ways it could be transformed. While christened Dane Easter Colby, he has adopted the last name of “Rose” among friends for its energetic beauty.
